Diss Express: 1sts suffer fifth defeat of season

Garboldisham (248) v Acle (272-8), 24 June 2017. Reproduced from the Diss Express A high-scoring opening-wicket stand from Acle proved to be the difference as Garboldisham 1sts slumped to the their fifth defeat of the season on Saturday 24 June. Visiting skipper Joshua Rowe won the toss at The Langley and opted to bat first, which proved to be the correct decision. Openers Geoff Handley and Jaskaran Cheema made the Garboldisham bowling attack toil, putting on 172 runs for the first wicket. Handley (82) was first to fall to the bowling of Dan Constable, while Cheema lasted long enough to complete his century, before having his wicket snared by Rob Fuller for 117 — a knock that included 14 fours and two maximums. Fuller went on to be Garboldisham’s most destructive bowler, ending his nine overs with figures of 5-59. After removing the free-scoring Cheema, he also accounted for Rowe (1), Thomas Wilson (15), Craig Press (31) and Andrew Spaxman (11). Due to Fuller’s form, the Acle innings never found any major momentum after Cheema had …

Jonny Wyatt’s 140 helps 2nds to big victory. Match summaries for Saturday 17 June, 2017

Jonny Wyatt scores 140 for 2nds Garboldisham 1st XI travelled a few miles up the road to face local rivals, Old Buckenham. Garby won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Tom Davey was on form and ended on 56 not out but the rest of the team struggled and the 1sts finished on 143 all out. Good bowling from Garboldisham kept Old Buckenham pinned down and four wickets fell, but in the end Garby’s 143 on the board was never going to be enough and the Bucks chased it down in the 43rd over to win by 6 wickets. The 2nds were at home to Beccles who won the toss and put Garby in to bat. Jonny Wyatt and Alex Cook were both on sparkling form and were either lofting balls away to the boundary or piercing the ring of fielders who could only watch in weary frustration on this very hot afternoon. Beccles were relieved to see the back of Jonny Wyatt when he was eventually caught in the deep for 140 in the 36th over with the score on …

Maiden century for Toby Culling!

Mellis v Garboldisham Friendly, 11 June 2017 Match report by Sandy Culling After the disappointment of Saturday’s results (1sts lost to Cromer by 79 runs, 4ths lost to Rackheath by 74 runs), 9 fine men and boys of Garboldisham travelled to Mellis. Having lost the toss, the young opening partnership of Toby Culling and Phil Carr started with good running between the wickets and put on 109 before Phil was bowled for 48. Toby and Arthur Johnson continued in the same vein and despite Arthur offering up a simple catch that was dropped, they put on another 100 partnership before Toby retired after smashing an on-drive to reach his first ever century. This left Andrew Whilstler to find some form after a difficult few weeks and he ended 8 not out with Arthur not out 49. After tea, the young openers George Self and Will Cunningham did a great job bowling straight and full leaving Mellis on 29 after the first 10 overs, the opening partnership was then broken by Andrew Whistler with a great spell …

Wins all round for GCC!

Match summaries for Saturday 3 June 2017 Garboldisham 1st XI travelled up to Fakenham. The hosts won the toss and put themselves in to bat and made a solid start with 82 runs on the board before Garby finally made the breakthrough just after the drinks break with a wicket coming from Dan Constable. This led to a whole cluster of Fakenham wickets tumbling for not many runs: 82-2, 93-3, 99-4 and 108-5. However, rearguard action helped Fakenham’s cause and they finished their innings on 186-8. Gavin Barnes took 4 wickets with Dan Constable picking up 3. In reply, 43 runs from Dan and 38 from Alex Hogg (both dismissed by stumpings) plus a late middle order partnership from captain Danny Cash (24*) and Jack Stevenson (22*) pushed Garby over the line in the 47th over and they won by 4 wickets to keep themselves at the top of the Norfolk Alliance Premier League! The 2nds were at home against Rocklands and batting first, Garboldisham made a wobbly start (20-3), but great knocks from Harry Youngson (87), who was parachuted into the 2nds at the …
