| Coaching
Success |
|
Garboldisham
Cricket Club has strengthened its Youth Cricket organisation with the
addition of four new in-house coaches.
Club members Alex Hogg, Jonny Leech, Sarah McGahan and Lydia Raven,
who are all just 16 years old, have successfully completed their ECB Level
1 Cricket Coaching qualification on a course run by the Norfolk Cricket
Board. The foursome join
established Garboldisham coaches Ian Melvin and Chris Jones, who
themselves are working on their Level 2 award.
They will be using their expertise to coach youth players at the
regular Friday night training sessions during the summer outdoor season.
Garboldisham
Cricket Club are particularly delighted that Sarah and Lydia, who are also
members of the Norfolk County squads and were the only girls on the
course, have shown their continuing enthusiasm for their sport by gaining
this qualification, which clearly shows the opportunities that are
available to any girl who is interested in taking up cricket.

| Garboldisham
aims for "Clubmark" |
| The Garboldisham
Cricket Club Committee have started the process of working towards the
ECB's pioneering club accreditation scheme "Clubmark" to develop
a vibrant and healthy club infrastructure. We have joined a growing
number of cricket clubs across England and Wales that are prioritising
junior development, creating a benchmark for high quality community club
cricket.
ECB Clubmark gives clubs an opportunity to write and
implement new procedures as well as acknowledge existing practices.
We are required to present evidence and demonstrate implementation across
four different themes (Duty of Care and Safeguarding Children, the Cricket
Programme, Knowing Your Club and its Community and Club Management),
culminating in the production of a Club Development Plan. Although
we've got the work underway it is a lengthy process but our aim is to gain
the accreditation during the early part of the 2010 season.

14 County Finalists - March 2009 |

Garboldisham
U14s battled their way through the group stages and semi-final, to finish
as runners up against Vauxhall Mallards in the final of the Lord's
Taverners U14s six-a-side indoor cricket competition at UEA Sports Park.
This
countywide competition attracted 12 of the best youth teams across Norfolk
and the Garboldisham lads really did themselves and the club proud in
finishing as runners-up against a very strong Mallards side. There were
fine bowling performances from captain Ben Asker, Joe Paul and Matt Allin
who took clusters of wickets and the pick of the batsmen was Harry
Youngson who twice poured on runs to help see the boys safely through to
the final.

Garboldisham now has four girls in the 2008 Norfolk U15
Girls squad. Sarah McGahan and Lydia Raven have been
joined by Charlotte Vaughan and Megan Hogg. Sarah, Charlotte and
Megan played in the first game of the season on 27 April against
Oxfordshire (Lydia was selected but was injured). The game was
extremely exciting, with Norfolk needing one to win off the very last ball
of the match - and it was Charlotte who got the winning run! |

Ling Farm, Garboldisham. Team managers gave summaries of the
season's performance before presenting awards to individual players.
The evening also included awards for some of the adults who had helped
with Friday nets and generally supporting the Junior Section. The
evening ended with a surprise presentation to Peter Barnes to thank him
for the work he puts into making junior cricket at Garboldisham such a
success. |

Second
Garboldisham Girl in County Squad
Lydia Raven made her County debut on Sunday 3 June 2007 when she played
for the Norfolk U17s away against Nottinghamshire, joining fellow
Garboldisham player Sarah McGahan.
Nottinghamshire batted first and quickly built a decent total.
However, having made the initial breakthrough, Norfolk rapidly took a
string of wickets, with three separate bowlers having the chance of a
hat-trick. Sarah took an important catch close to the boundary and
Nottinghamshire were eventually all out for 149 just before the end of
their 35 overs.
Norfolk started their innings slowly but with some excellent teamwork
and determined running between the wickets. However,
Nottinghamshire's close fielding was very good and the runs wouldn't come
quickly enough. Norfolk ended their 35 overs on 109 for 5, beaten but not
downhearted after what had been an exciting game of cricket. |

U12s
Win North Suffolk Youth League Title
Garboldisham Cricket Club U12s saw off stiff
competition to win the North Suffolk Youth League 6-a-side indoor cricket
tournament held at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham on 17 March
2007. Garboldisham beat a very strong Yoxford team by just two runs
in a tense and nail-biting final.
Jubilant captain, Ben Asker put Garbie’s success down
to great teamwork, tight bowling and quick running between wickets.

Girls
Finish With a Packed Programme
After a season with few opportunities for match experience, the Girls'
team finished the year with a hectic programme of 3 matches in 7 days!
Sunday 27 August saw the team playing the "away" leg of a
two-game mini-series against Blundeston. A very young Garboldisham
side found themselves up against an older, if similarly experienced,
Blundeston side. Both teams put on a spirited and determined display
before Blundeston emerged the clear winners.
On Wednesday 30 August the girls were again away, this time at
Stradbrooke. The sides were more evenly matched on this occasion and
Garboldisham worked well as a team towards a very convincing victory.
Blundeston were the visitors at the Langley for the second leg of the
series on Sunday 3 September. The teams were more evenly matched and
Blundeston had to work harder for their second victory.
This has been a hectic, exciting but very useful end to the season for
the girls. They have gained valuable experience playing as a team
against varying opposition. We will now be working over the winter
to build on that experience and to put together fixtures spread more
evenly over next season. |

Norfolk
U15 Girls Debut
Garboldisham player Sarah McGahan made her first
appearance for Norfolk U15 Girls against Northamptonshire on 11 June
2006. In what was also their first full game of the season, earlier
matches having been cancelled due to bad weather, Norfolk produced a
spirited innings but eventually fell to a determined Northamptonshire
batting side. |

ECB/Lady
Taverners U15 East Anglian Competition
Garboldisham player Sarah McGahan was asked to play with the Norfolk
"Red Mist" Cricket Team as part of the ECB/Lady Taverners
U15 Indoor Cricket Competition for East Anglia. The competition was
played at Brandon Leisure Centre on 19 February 2006 and Red Mist were
unbeaten in their four matches. The team moved on to the Regional
Finals in April. |
The Regional final took place at Stoke Manderville Stadium on 9 April.
"Red Mist" were up against extremely good teams from
Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Middlesex and Kent. Unfortunately the
opposition proved too strong but the girls gained valuable competition
experience which will stand them in good stead for the coming outdoor
season. |

The Junior Presentation Evening was again held at the Chequers Inn,
Bressingham on 2 December. Certificates were given for achievement,
awards were made to "Rising Stars" and even some of the unsung
but vital volunteers who take the subs, organise the raffles, clear up
after nets and cook the Friday night barbecue received recognition.
The presentations were made by Club Chairman Robert Leech who also thanked
Peter Barnes for his enthusiasm and organisation of the Junior section |

Club Junior Nets

|
More than 80 youngsters of all ages turned out for the first Club
Juniors outdoor nets practice on 22 April. Batting, bowling and ball
handling skills were all dusted off as the enthusiastic young players got
ready for the new season. And as usual, the post-practice barbecue
was very popular! |

"CricketForce"
Working Weekend 2005
|
|
|
Snow didn’t stop members of Garboldisham Cricket Club’s Junior Section
turning out for nets practice. As
well as developing their batting and bowling skills, the players also took
the opportunity to get in some practice for the English Cricket Board’s
“CricketForce” weekend on 2nd and 3rd April.
Garboldisham will be one of many clubs around the country where
members, players, parents and supporters will be turning out to complete a
range of maintenance tasks ahead of the new season. |
|
Club Chairman Robert Leech hopes that as many volunteers as possible will
come along to the Club’s ground armed with paintbrushes, shovels,
hammers and lots of enthusiasm to help refurbish the Clubhouse, cut the
pitch, tidy the ground, erect new fencing and build new covers.
There are also plans to lay a new artificial pitch and hopefully
replace the temperamental generator with mains electricity. The Club is providing food for the volunteers and organising
evening entertainment.
Work starts at 9:00 a.m. each day. The Club would also welcome
support from local businesses, either with manpower or materials.
More details are available from Peter Barnes on 07884 005135.

they get on? Click here to find out
